April 09

1st -  Dry but cold ENE winds for all visits throughout the day into the evening.  The scrape held 5 Ringed Plovers, 1 Blk T Godwit, 8 Avocet, 8+ Redshank, 7 Turnstones and on the brook a Little Grebe. GG/JK/KA/AD/JBS.  A Siskin was a fly-over N and a Woodcock was noted. GG.  A Swallow was seen again today. PRD.  This evening's birds included Barn Owl, Little Owl and over Little Holland Marsh was a male Marsh Harrier. AD/JBS.

2nd - Dry with a slight mist all day and NE winds.  Around mid-day a 1st S Caspian Gull was located and viewed for c2hrs on the scrape. 5+ Ringed Plovers, 6+ Turnstones, 4 Avocet, 10+ Redshanks and 1 Swallow were also seen from the hide. PRD/KA/MR/GG/LR/PR. 7 Siskin flew N. GG/PRD/KA. Additional birds were 2 adult Med Gulls, 4 Oystercatchers, 1 Golden Plover and a single Corn Bunting. PRD.  A Chiffchaff was in the carpark. JBS.

3rd - Another misty morning with very light NW winds.  Along the seawall and beach were 3 Wheatears and 3 Oystercatchers.  The scrape held 1 Knot, 1 Blk T Godwit, 6 Avocet, 4 Ringed Plovers, 2 Oystercatchers and as to be expected, reduced numbers of Wigeon 72 and Teal 40.  7 Oystercatchers circled over before heading N. KA/GG

5th - Dry and bright. Seen today were 1 of each Willow Warbler, Wheatear and a fem Blackcap, 4+ Chiffchaffs and 8+ fly-over Linnets.  The scrape held 12 Avocets, 3 Blk T Godwits, 6+ Turnstones, 4 Ringed Plovers and 4 Dunlin. Also noted 5 Purple Sandpipers and 1 WoodcockPRD/AD. A Fieldfare was at the paddock. 2 Ringed Plovers on the sluice. KA.  

6th - Dry, mainly bright with some winds. A morning visit produced 3 adult Little Gulls on the scrape along with 12 Avocet, 3 Turnstones, 2 Blk T Godwits, 2 Curlew, 5 Oystercatchers, 4+ Ringed Plovers and 10+ Redshank. 2 adult Med Gulls were again on site as was 1 adult male Marsh Harrier. 25+ Linnets flew over and 1 of each Chiffchaff and Wheatear were noted. PRD.  Late afternoon a Bullfinch was seen at the Boating club compound. JBS, also noted were 6 Wheatears. PL 

7th - Dry, slightly overcast with light winds. The scrape, sluice and seawall this morning provided 7 Blk T Godwits, 6 Avocet, 4+ Ringed Plovers, 7 Turnstones, 25+ Redshank, 3 Oystercatchers, 2 Dunlin and 4 Purple Sandpipers. A Little Egret flew over the carpark. KA/PRD.  1 Brambling was noted. MR. 3 Wheatears were also reported.

8th - Sunny with a strong cool breeze.  A Greenshank was on the scrape early afternoon. A Swallow, 1 Little Egret and 2 Chiffchaff were also seen. PRD.  1 Swallow was noted early evening and near the farm, a Cuckoo was heard but not located. JBS.

9th - Overcast for most of the day with strong winds.  18 Avocets were on the scrape along with 9 Blk T Godwits. 2 each of Dunlin, Oystercatchers, Turnstones and adult Med Gulls were noted, as were 4 Purple Sandpipers and 3 Ringed Plovers.  3 male Blackcaps, 1 Wheatear and a White Wagtail were also on site. PRD.

10th - Light SW winds and warm. Migrants seen were 12+ Swallows, 3+ Blackcaps, 3+ Yellow Wagtails and 2 Chiffchaffs. The scrape held 9 Blk T Godwits, 10 Avocet, 5 Ringed Plovers, 7 Turnstones, 7 Oystercatchers and 3 Gadwall (2 drakes). 2 adult Med Gulls were on the golf course and a female Marsh Harrier flew S. GG/PRD

11th - Again light SW winds and warm. Seen on the scrape were 1 LRP, 2 Dunlin, 11 Blk T Godwits, now 24 Avocets, 4 Ringed Plovers, 5 Turnstones and 4 Oystercatchers.  Migrants noted were 1 Sedge Warbler, 2 Swallows, 5 Blackcaps, 3 Chiffchaffs and frustratingly a Cetti's Warbler that was heard singing a number of times but not seen. GG/PRD. A Fieldfare was also seen around the carpark bushes early on. GG 

12th - Cooler with a NE wind, On the scrape Avocet numbers continue to increase and are now totalling 30. SM/AM Other birds noted today were 1 LRP, 6 Blk T Godwits, 4 Ringed Plovers, 3 Turnstones and 4 Oystercatchers. Also  noted were 1 Reed Warbler, 2 House Martins, 3 Yellow Wagtails (including 1 Blue Headed), 7 Swallows, 5 Blackcaps and 2 Chiffchaffs. GG/KA/MR 

13th - Overcast, light breeze and a slight mist all day.  Some variety again with the scrape holding 1 Bar T Godwit, 1 Greenshank, 7 Blk T Godwits, 26 Avocet, 4 Ringed Plovers, 3+ Turnstones and an extremely brief visit by 9 Dunlin.  30+ Swallows, 4 House Martins, 4+ Sand Martins, 1 White and 1 Yellow Wagtail, 2 adult Med Gulls and 1 Purple Sandpiper were also noted. Other species included 1 Whitethroat, a Blackcap, 4+ Willow Warblers, a Reed Warbler and 3 Wheatears. PRD/CJ/AD/KA.  Later afternoon sightings were a male Marsh Harrier, a Corn Bunting at the farm and the scrape area additions were 2 Gadwall and 3 Yellow Wagtails (including 1 Blue Headed). AD.

14th - Slightly overcast but dry. A 1st S Med Gull was on the Golf Course, nearby was a Lesser Whitethroat.  The scrape hosted 24 Avocet, 7 Blk T Godwits, 1 each of Greenshank, LRP and Curlew, 2 Dunlin and 6 Turnstones, while 6 Sanderling were on the beach.  Singles of Yellow Wagtail (Blue Headed)Wheatear, Swallow, Barn Owl and Willow Warbler were also seen, along with 2 Chiffchaff, 2 Goldfinch and 3+ Corn Buntings. PRD

15th - A blustery SE wind made it difficult this morning.  Passerines noted at the farm were 3 Corn Buntings, 1 Chiffchaff and a Blackcap, while around the bushes were 5 Blackcaps, 2 Chiffchaffs and 1 Willow Warbler.  Birds seen across the scrape were 1 Sand Martin, 3 Swallows, 4 House Martins, 20 Avocets, 6 Blk T Godwits, 1 Little Egret, 2 Ringed Plover, 3 Curlew and 4 Turnstones. GG

16th - Mostly mild with some rain.  The scrape today held 25 Avocets, 7 Blk T Godwits, 4 Ringed Plovers, 6 Curlew, 3+ Oystercatchers a drake Tufted Duck and 3+ Yellow Wagtails (1 Blue Headed).  An LRP was seen briefly, as was a Whimbrel that dropped in on the scrape this evening.  Late afternoon 1 Whimbrel had already been seen, heading strongly N along the front. 12+ Swallows, 2+ House Martins, 2 Wheatears, 1 Reed Warbler, 1 Sedge Warbler and 6+ Turnstones were also on site. Again a Cetti's Warbler was heard several times but not seen. The bushes provided 1 Willow Warbler, 1 Lesser Whitethroat and a Blackcap. GG/SC/KA/PRD/MR. A Purple Sandpiper was along the seawall. PRD.  3 Sanderling were near the sluice and on the paddock was a single Fieldfare.KA  

17th - Overcast, a slight breeze and some drizzle.  The Cetti's Warbler has finally been seen!!  It was located today from the carpark. PRD.  Viewed from the hide throughout the day were 3 Spotted Redshanks, 22 Avocet, 7 Blk T Godwits, 5+ Turnstones, 4+ Ringed Plovers, 4 Oystercatchers, 16+ Swallows, 4+ House Martins and 3 Yellow Wagtails (1 Blue Headed)PRD/KA/MR. A male Wheatear was on the mounds. KA.

19th - Mild and bright with a strong breeze.  A morning visit and the Cetti's Warbler was viewable beyond the sluice area. The scrape provided 3 Spotted Redshanks, 5 Blk T Godwits, 3 Turnstones, 4 Ringed Plovers and 20 Avocet. A Hobby was seen coming in/off the sea, while along the reedbeds were both Sedge and Reed Warblers and a Reed Bunting. AD.  A single Sandwich Tern was reported off-shore during the morning.   A 35 minute late evening seawatch produced 4 Sandwich Terns (2+2), 1 Fulmar, 2 Whimbrel and 2 Oystercatchers all going N. GG.  

20th - Bright with a NE wind.  Birds seen this morning were 2 Purple Sandpipers and 7 Wheatears by the sluice, the bushes and reed beds held 1 Cetti's Warbler briefly, 2 Sedge and 1 Reed Warbler, also 7+ Lesser and 1 Common Whitethroat, 4 Willow Warblers, 3 Chiffchaffs, 4 Blackcaps and 2 Goldcrests. On the scrape Avocet numbers totalled 25, with 1 Spotted Redshank, 7 Whimbrel, an adult Yellow legged Gull, 4 Blk T Godwits, 3 Ringed Plovers, 2 Oystercatchers and 2 Yellow Wagtails(1 Blue Headed). 28 Curlews ware also noted. GG/KA.   

21st - Eventually sunny with a SW wind. The scrape held 1 Bar T Godwit, 1 Spotted Redshank, 7 Whimbrel, 2 Blk T Godwits, 4 Ringed Plovers, 4 Turnstones, 2 Oystercatchers, 1 2S Med Gull, 20 Avocets, 5 Yellow Wagtails(1 Blue Headed) and a White Wagtail. The bushes were not checked but Chiffchaff, Lesser and Common Whitethroat, Sedge and Reed Warblers (3) were noted, a female Marsh Harrier drifted N. PRD/GG. Early evening 12 Common Scoter flew S. KA/PRD/GG.

22nd - Overall bright and sunny with ENE winds. A very early, chilly start provided variety today. Seen from along the seawall were 1 Purple Sandpiper, 8+ Turnstones, 5 Oystercatchers, 11 Whimbrel, 7 Curlew, 8+ Wheatear, 12 Linnets and 1 Barn Owl, with 7 Shelduck headed N off-shore and 1 Common Sandpiper flew in/off onto the beach before it too, headed N. The scrape supplied 16 Avocet, 2 Blk T Godwits, 1 LRP, 2+ Ringed Plovers and 1 Coot, while near the hide were 2 male Whinchat and some 20+ Swallows were also seen. Then just after 8am, 2 singing Continental Coal Tits were a delightful sound and sight in the pine beyond the mounds, they then flew S and were lost to view. KA. Around the rest of the site were 8+ Lesser and 3 Common Whitethroats, 2 Willow Warblers, 1 Chiffchaff, 5 Blackcaps, 2 Reed and 3 Sedge Warblers. GG/PRD. Also noted were 6 Brent Geese and a single Siskin heading N. PRD. The Cetti's Warbler was seen. MR. An Adder was seen close to the hide. GG/KA. 

23rd - Bright with a S wind. Seen around the site today were 1 Bar T Godwit, 24  Whimbrel, 1 Dunlin, 15 Avocet, 2 Blk T Godwits, 4+ Ringed Plovers, 5 Turnstones, 1 Snipe, 9 Oystercatchers, also 4+ Lesser and 6 Common Whitethroats, 2 Willow Warblers, 1 Chiffchaff, 5 Blackcaps, 3 Reed and 5 Sedge Warblers. GG/PRD/AEC. A look around the farm area this evening, 5 singing Corn Buntings were noted.GG/KA. 

24th - Bright all day with strong S winds this morning, changing to SE later.  The scrape held 18 Avocets, 3 Blk T Godwits, 6 Turnstones, 4 Ringed Plovers and 1 Snipe. Briefly this morning were also 1 of each Bar T Godwit and Greenshank and late afternoon there was a single Yellow Wagtail (Blue Headed).  3 House Martins, 2 Sand Martins, 3 Reed, 1 Willow and 2 Sedge Warblers were noted, as were 3 Blackcaps, 2 Common and 5 Lesser Whitethroats, 1 Wheatear and 7 Whimbrel.  3 Purple Sandpipers were seen, 4 Sanderling were on the beach and off-shore a Little Tern flew N.  A Coal Tit was heard but not seen. 25th - SSE winds and bright. Bird of the day was a female Montagu's Harrier that was first seen around 1100hrs and was seen last at 1900 hrs, this bird was difficult as it spent long periods sitting in the rape fields. GG/PRD/KA. Other birds of note were 1 Hobby, 1 Grey Plover, 1 Green Sandpiper, 4 Bar T Godwits, 6 Blk T Godwits, 1 Snipe, 16+ Whimbrel, 1 Greenshank, 3 Dunlin, 20 Avocets, 6 Turnstones, 4 Ringed Plovers, 2 Oystercatchers.Additional birds seen were a 1S Med Gull, 1 Swift, 3 Corn Buntings, 2 Yellow Wagtails (1 blue headed) and 2 Purple Sandpipers.   

26th - Bright with some breeze. The morning started with 1 Fulmar, 2 Sand Martins, 1 Wheatear, 1 Kingfisher and the Cetti's Warbler. GG.  A Cuckoo was seen in flight. IM. Slightly later, there was an imm male Black Redstart on the mounds and a male Marsh Harrier above the scrape/fields. 1pr Gadwall, 6 Blk T Godwits, 1 Bar T Godwit, a 1S Med Gull, 16 Avocets, 2 Ringed Plovers and 5 Turnstones were also noted. 2 Yellow Wagtails flew over. GG/KA/PRD/CJ.  A Hobby was seen. JBS. Afternoon birds included 1 Buzzard drifting N, a single Sandwich Tern N, 2 Wheatears along the seawall and 14 Whimbrel with 3 Bar T Godwits on the fields behind the sewage farm. PRD/CJ.

27th - A very miserable, on/off rainy day.  After a weekend with a good variety of birds, today, despite a 3 hour mid-morning to early afternoon visit, the only notable species were 19 Avocet, 3 Blk T Godwits, 8+ Whimbrel, 1 Ringed Plover, 30+ House Martins and 2 Wheatear. PRD.

29th - Bright with a E-SE wind, birds seen today were 2 Wood Sandpipers, 1 Grey Plover, 2 Blk T Godwits, 3 Dunlin, 3 Turnstones, 4 Ringed Plovers, 1 Snipe, 1 Yellow Wagtail, 2x2nd Summer Med Gulls and Avocet numbers were down to 7. Across the road were 11 Whimbrel and a total of 4 Cuckoos were seen (3 together). 2 Wheatears were along the sea wall and around the bushes and reeds were 1 Cetti's Warbler and at least 15 Reed Warblers, 10 Sedge Warblers, 20 Common Whitethroats, 7 Lesser Whitethroats, and 6 Blackcaps. 2 Sandwich Terns flew NE. PRD/GG.  

30th - Sightings of 7 Avocets, 1 Shoveler, 2 Whimbrel and c25 Sand Martins were during very brief visits this morning. PBrNo other coverage today as we all went off to see the Dungeness Crested Lark and the Portland Collared Flycatcher, an exceptional pair of birds............
