February 09

1st - Snow showers and strong E winds.  Visits today saw again much the same on the scrape as the end of January with 1 Pink footed Goose, 1pr Gadwall, 49 Blk T Godwits, 24 Golden Plover, 26 Canada Geese and a Little Grebe.  Also noted were 2 Purple Sandpipers, 5 Turnstones and 3 Sanderling.  Seawatching provided 36 Brent Geese, 3 Eider (1d+2fem) and a drake R B Merganser all heading N. AD/PRD.

2nd - Snow showers, strong E Winds and as expected the scrape was semi-frozen.  An early visit to the hide yielded 34+ Blk T Godwits, 1 Pink footed Goose, 20+ Golden Plover and 3 Turnstones of note.  A single Purple Sandpiper was on the shore and an adult Kittiwake off the sluice area. KA.

3rd - Dry, icy cold with slight SE winds.  A dawn start saw the scrape 90% frozen with 60 Blk T Godwits, 1 Pink footed Goose and 1pr Gadwall being the only noteable birds around/on it.  c600 Wigeon were on the sea and 6 Brent Geese flew N.  2 Purple Sandpipers, 4 Turnstones, 1 Redshank, Fieldfare and a Stonechat were also noted along the shore and seawall. KA.  Sightings for mid-morning near the farm were c550 Golden Plover, 4 Fieldfares, 5 Redwing and a Little Egret that was casually using the footpath.  Across the rest of the site 2 Sanderling were seen, Purple Sandpipers had increased to 4 and a Red T Diver headed N. PRD

4th - A drake Tufted Duck was noted on the pond across the road and 14 Canada Geese in the field a bit further along. PRD.

5th - A day of intermittent heavy rain.  An afternoon visit produced 4 Purple Sandpipers, 2 Turnstones, 1 Sanderling, 2 Gadwall and 3 Blk T Godwits.  Located in the carpark bushes was 1 Bullfinch. PRD.

6th - Overcast with some rain.  An hour's visit along the seawall included sightings of an adult Med Gull, 4 Purple Sandpipers, 4 Turnstones, 1 Sanderling, 4 Shelduck and 20 unsettled Blk T Godwits. PRD.

8th - Bright with light cloud.  Noted birds today included 9 Fieldfare and 2 Redwing for the farm/paddocks. By the sluice were 3 Purple Sandpipers with 2 Turnstones. Off-shore 1 Red T Diver and 8 Brent Geese headed N, while viewed from the hide were 21 Blk T Godwits, 2 Gadwall, 10 Curlew and 2 Little Grebes. AD

9th - Wet, dull and a SW wind made conditions miserable, viewed from the hide were 12 Blk T Godwits, 1 Turnstone and 8 Gadwall, 2 Purple Sandpipers were on the beach. GG/PRD/PB. An hour seawatch over high tide produced just 1 flock of 10 Eider N, PRD. Earlier 1 Red T Diver also flew N. GG.  

10th - Dry, bitterly cold with strong winds starting out NW changing to W.  Very heavy flooding across the entire site spread all birds far and wide.  The "lagoon" viewed from the hide, provided 4 Gadwall, 17 Blk T Godwits, 1 Ruff and 4+ Turnstones.  A short morning seawatch yielded only 3 Sanderling. KA/GG.  Over high tide into the afternoon,  seawatching gave 2 Shelduck, 1 R B Merganser and 1 Red T Diver S, while 2 Black Throated, 1 Great Northern and 9+ Red T Divers headed N. Also noted were 3 Brent Geese and 1 Turnstone. 11th - A mild and brighter day today with some afternoon rain.  Birds on site included an adult Yellow Legged Gull, 10 Gadwall, 12 Shelduck, 7 Turnstones, 5 Snipe, 2 Ringed Plover, 10 Blk T Godwits, 25+ Curlew and 2 Stonechats.  A single Oystercatcher was on the golfcourse. PRD

12th - Dry but icy conditions.  The highlights of today included a female Peregrine, an adult Yellow legged Gull, a drake Pintail and 4 Purple Sandpipers, 20 Blk T Godwits, 1 Ruff, 2 Ringed Plovers and 9+ Turnstones. Viewed from the hide early afternoon was a probable 1st winter Caspian Gull. PRD

13th - A cold NE wind this morning and still plenty of water on the scrape and surrounding fields. Waders viewed from the hide were 3 Ruff, 11 Dunlin, 22 Blk T Godwits and 40+ Curlews,the drake Pintail and 2 Gadwall were among the Teal and Wigeon. Out to sea a Great Northern Diver flew S, heading N were 3 Red T Divers and 27 Brent Geese. An adult winter Med Gull was on the sea and a single Ringed Plover on the sluice. GG

14th - A bright sunny day with a light N wind. On the scrape were 4 Ruff, a drake Pintail and 13 Gadwall being noteworthy. A fem/imm Marsh Harrier was pushed through by the corvids and at the farm were 50+ Skylarks and 4 Fieldfare. A Woodcock was flushed from the woods and quickly pounced upon by a Sparrowhawk, I then spooked the hawk and the Woodcock flew off, apparently with not too much damage. GG.  Additional birds of note this afternoon were 20 Blk T Godwits, 8 Turnstones and 1 Snipe. KA

15th - Cold light winds with some rain.  An escaped female Ringed Teal was seen by one observer from the hide this morning but it could not be relocated later. PNs.  Other visits provided of note, 4 Ruff, 2 Redshank, 25 Gadwall, 26 Blk T Godwits, 1 Ringed Plover, 10 Turnstones and 1 OystercatcherKA/GG/AD

16th - Bright with a light W wind. A fem/Imm Marsh Harrier flew strongly W this morning, on the sluice were 3 Purple Sandpipers and 5 Turnstones. The scrape held 4 Ruff, 1 Redshank, 2 Ringed Plovers, 2 Oystercatchers and 27 Gadwall, also seen were 2 Stonechats by the golf course. GG.  A slightly later visit added 1 Little Egret and another fem/Imm Marsh Harrier. PRD.  While a short visit just prior to dusk added 19 Blk T Godwits, 3 Sanderling and off-shore a single Brent Goose headed N. KA.

17th - A mild day with some drizzle.  A BirdTrack report for today included 36 Gadwall, 3 Ringed Plovers, 3 Ruff, 1 Sanderling, 13 Blk T Godwits, 1 Redshank, 2 Bullfinch, 1 Pink footed Goose, 1 Little Egret, 1 Oystercatcher, 2 Purple Sandpipers, 1 Snipe and 1 Yellow legged Gull.SC.  1 S E Owl, 6 Fieldfare and 30 Curlew were also noted. PRD. Also seen was a Woodcock. AEC.

18th - A still but damp day, this morning the Pink footed Goose is still in with the Greylags. Around the sluice was 1 Purple Sandpiper, 1 Sanderling and 4 Turnstones,from the hide 1 Ruff, 25 Blk T Godwits, 1 Dunlin, 1 Snipe,  2 Ringed Plovers, 1 Oystercatcher and 28 Gadwall were the most noteworthy. PRD/GG.  

19th - Calm and overcast to start this morning, the Pink footed Goose and 2 Whitefronted Geese in with the Greylags. Around the sluice were 3 Purple Sandpipers and 1 Turnstone, a Little Egret was seen in the approach road pool and in the bushes were 2 Bullfinches. Noted from the hide were 26 Blk T Godwits, 1 Dunlin, 1 Snipe, 3 Ringed Plovers and 35 Gadwall.GG. Seawatching gave 1 Great Northern Diver, 7 Red T Divers and a GC Grebe S also 3 Shelducks N. PRD/GG. 

20th - Very slight breeze, bright but chilly.  A late afternoon visit yielded 3 Turnstones near the sluice, while the scrape provided 41+ Gadwall, 1 Pink footed Goose, 3 Ruff, 1 Blk T Godwit, 10+ Snipe and 18 Curlew. KA.

21st - Dry, bright and a slight chill in the air.  2 Firecrests were located this morning, one by the toilet block and the other near the sewage farm. KA. The sluice played host to 2 Purple Sandpipers, 7 Turnstones and 2 Ringed Plovers.  Viewed from the hide were 2 Ruff, 3 Blk T Godwits, 2 Snipe, 37 Gadwall, 1 Dunlin and a Brent Goose. Also noted were 3 Goldcrests. KA/AD.  4 Stonechats and a Barn Owl were seen towards the golfcourse. AD

22nd - An overcast but dry day.  A Peregrine was seen in flight, low over the fields behind the sewage farm and a brief view of a Coal Tit on the feeders. JBS.

23rd - Rain in the air this morning but quite mild and very still.  A Firecrest was again near the toilet block, doing the circuit with 2 Goldcrests.  Prior to high tide, 5 Ringed Plovers were on/around the sluice, while off-shore 2 Brent Geese headed N.  Birds on the scrape this morning included 21+ Blk T Godwits, 35 Gadwall, 2 Snipe, also 1 of each Redshank, Golden Plover, Oystercatcher and Coot.  Also noted were 1 Little Egret and a single Brent Goose near the brook. 4+ Goldcrests by the sewage farm. KA.  Additional for later in the day were 4 Sanderling, 5 Turnstone and 1 Purple Sandpiper. PBr.        

24th - Overcast and still. The Firecrest is still showing by the toilet block and Short eared, Barn and Little Owls were all seen in close company of each other. PRD. During the afternoon bird numbers were down on the scrape due to work being carried out by a digger clearing the reed bed. Seen were a pair of Pintail, 3 Blk T Godwits and 6 Gadwall. 2 Ringed Plovers were on the sluice. KA

25th - Light drizzle and a W wind. An adult Yellow legged Gull was on the Sewage Farm this morning, a Little Egret was again on the approach road floods and on the scrape were 2 Blk T Godwits, 2 Ringed Plover and 34 Gadwall. GG.

26th - A mild day, with light rain late afternoon.  Noted initially in flight, a female Merlin was seen to perch on hawthorns between the scrape and the golfcourse. The S E Owl still present in this area. The scrape again low on numbers with 6 Blk T Godwits, 2 Gadwall and 2 Coot.  Singles of Stonechat, Purple Sandpiper and Sanderling were also noted. PRD

27th - Mild with a N to NW wind. Seen today were 3 Purple Sandpipers, 3 Sanderling, 8+ Turnstone, 5 Ringed Plovers, 7 Blk T Godwits, 2+ Ruff, 1 Dunlin, 3 Golden Plovers, 1 Stonechat, 2 Little Owls and a Barn Owl. KA/JK/GG. Late afternoon the S E Owl was seen just S of the golfcourse. JBS

28th - Dry with SW winds. 2 Avocets, 4 Dunlin, 2 Ruff, 6 Blk T Godwits, 8 Turnstones, 5 Ringed Plovers, 3 Snipe, 3 Purple Sandpipers and 3+ Gt Spotted Woodpeckers were seen. KA/SC/PC/GG/PRD.
