July 09

1st - No reports today.

2nd - Hot and bright with a slight NE breeze.  The surprise bird of today was a female Goosander flying N at very close range to shore at 10.30am. PRD.  Viewed from the hide this morning were 1 Ruff, 1 Dunlin, 10 Blk T Godwits, 3 Ringed Plovers also 14 Avocets and 6 Shelduck with their respective young.  24 Curlew were short staying in the meadow beyond the scrape.  The carpark bushes held ChiffchaffLesser and Common Whitethroats. PRD/MR

3rd - After some overnight rain, another hot day with light winds. The scrape held 2 Gadwall, a male Ruff, 17 Blk T Godwits, 2 Greenshanks and a Green Sandpiper. 15+ Curlew and 6+ Avocets were present as were 2 Common Terns, a Little Egret and a female Marsh Harrier. PRD.

4th - Sunny with SSW winds. The scrape held 4 juvenile Egyptian Geese, 2 Greenshanks, 19 Blk T Godwits and 2 Ringed Plovers. GG. Mid-morning 6 Great Crested Grebes were sitting off-shore and 2 Common Terns were noted along with 20+ Curlew and the female Marsh Harrier. KA. Early evening 18 Common Scoters flew S. GG.

5th - Early start in the drizzle and gentle WSW wind. Around the bushes were 12 Chiffchaffs, 6 Lesser Whitethroats, 5 Common Whitethroats and 2 Blackcaps. GG. Viewed across the scrape were 30 Blk T Godwits, 1 Wood Sandpiper, 2 Greenshanks, 1 Little Egret, 3 Ringed Plovers, 6 Teal and a juv Yellow Wagtail.  24+ Curlew flew in briefly and the female Marsh Harrier was again noted. MR

6th - Cooler conditions this morning and S winds.  On the scrape were 28 Blk T Godwits, 4 Ringed Plovers, 3 juv Yellow Wagtails, 2 Dunlin, 3 Avocet +1 juv and a Curlew.  2 female Marsh Harriers were seen in flight and behind the sewage farm were 3 more Curlew. GG/MR/KA.  Off-shore a Skua sp. headed S. GG.  

7th - Following overnight rain, early morning was warm with light SW winds. Views from the hide provided 1 Little Egret, 7 Dunlin, 20+ Blk T Godwits, 2 Ringed Plovers, 1 Curlew, 3 Oystercatchers, 2 Redshanks, 4 Avocets +3 juv, 1 female Marsh Harrier, 4+ Sand Martins and 1+ juv Yellow Wagtails.  5 Lesser and 2 Common Whitethroats were near the sewage farm and 20+ Swifts were over the carpark. KA.  Mid-morning, 4 juv Egyptian Geese were back on the scrape and a preening Chiffchaff was also noted by the sewage farm. PRD.

8th - NW winds, overcast with occasional rain.  During the morning the scrape held of note, the 4 juv Egyptian Geese along with 7 Dunlin, 19+ Blk T Godwits, 2 Common Sandpipers and 1 juv Yellow Wagtail. MR.  An afternoon visit saw the addition of 7 Shoveler all being female/eclipse, 25+ Curlew, 6+ Redshank and Blk T Godwits at 22+.  An hour spent seawatching resulted in the sum total of 6 Oystercatchers headed S. PRD.

9th - No reports today.

10th - Mainly bright with some light WNW winds.  This afternoon, the 4 juv Egyptian Geese were on the scrape along with 3 juv LRP's, 3 Ringed Plovers, 12+ Blk T Godwits, 5 Avocets +1 juv, 1 Redshank +1 juv, 3 Teal, 3 Oystercatchers, 2 Greylag Geese and again 7 Shoveler.  Also noted for the site today were a juv Hobby and one of the female Marsh Harriers. PRD.

11th - Overcast turning brighter with light WSW winds.  Todays sightings were 1 female Peregrine, 4 Marsh Harriers, 1 Common and 1 Green Sandpiper, 3 Whimbrel, 1 Little Egret, 3 Dunlin, 27 Blk T Godwits, 3 Ringed Plovers, 15 Curlew, 5 Oystercatchers and a single Sandwich Tern fishing offshore.  Early morning 150+ Swallows and 80+ Sand Martins moved S.  Passerines of note were 8 Lesser Whitethroats and 2 Blackcaps. GG/IM/KA.  Additional for the evening were 4 Brent Geese. IM.

12th - Warm, bright with some cloud and SW winds.  A 90 minute seawatch this morning saw 13 Oystercatchers, 7 Whimbrel and 5 Turnstones. GG.  Throughout the morning to early afternoon, viewed from the hide were 2 Marsh Harriers, 1 Peregrine, 50+ Sand Martins, 29 Curlew and 3 Yellow Wagtails.  On the scrape itself were 28 Blk T Godwits, a 2nd S Med Gull, a very smart sum plum Knot, 1 Whimbrel, 6 Dunlin, 1 Common Sandpiper, 2 Ringed Plovers, 4 Oystercatchers, 7 Shoveler, 3 Avocet +3juv, 4 Teal, 9 Greylag Geese and albeit briefly, a single Greenshank. MR/GG/IM/JK/PRD/KA.

13th - Generally bright with reasonable S Winds.  Notable from visits, morning through to evening, were 1 LRP, 28 Blk T Godwits, 3 Ringed Plovers, 7 Dunlin, 1 of each Med Gull, Common and Green Sandpipers, 2 Little Egrets, 2+ Whimbrel, 2 Yellow Wagtails, 2 Marsh Harriers and 100+ Sand Martins. PRD/MR/JBS/KA

14th - A few good rain showers during the day and SW winds.  This morning on the scrape were 20+ Blk T Godwits, 1 of each LRP, Ringed Plover and Common Sandpiper, 3 Redshanks and 2 Avocet + 2juv, while 3 Whimbrel were fly-overs. 1 +1juv Marsh Harriers were also noted.  In front of the hide 1 Reed and 4 Sedge Warblers showed well after the rain. PRD/MRsl.  Off-shore an adult Arctic Tern headed S, also 2 Sandwich Terns. PRD. An afternoon visit saw Blk T Godwits at 38, Ringed Plovers and Common Sandpipers at 2 each, 1 Ruff, 9 Dunlin, 3 Green Sandpipers. MR.

15th - Overcast with sunny intervals and strong SW winds.  Viewed from the hide this morning were 43 Blk T Godwits, 3 Ringed Plovers, 1 LRP, 10 Dunlin, 1 Green and 1 Common Sandpipers.  4 Wigeon had made an appearance along with 6 Teal, 2 Shoveler and 16 Greylag Geese.  2 Yellow Wagtails and a Marsh Harrier were also noted. MR. In addition a 2nd summer Yellow legged Gull was on the scrape, also a Common Tern. At sea 22 Common Scoter and 5 drake Tufted Ducks flew SW.  PRD.

16th - Brisk SW winds, bright and warm.  Early morning the scrape held 1 Green and 1 Common Sandpipers, 1 LRP, 2 Greenshanks (briefly), 53+ Blk T Godwits, 16 Dunlin, 3 Avocet + 3juvs, 2 Wigeon and 2 Yellow Wagtails. Moving S were 40+ Sand Martins and 20+ Swifts. KA.  A later visit added 4 Marsh Harriers, 6 Curlew and 3 Whimbrel. 150+ Sand Martins were noted as were 3 Sandwich Terns headed S.  A juv Willow Warbler was also seen. PRD/CA. 2 of the Marsh Harriers were also viewed early evening. JBS.

17th - After a night of heavy rain and storms, mostly bright with WSW winds.  The scrape provided slight variation today with 2 LRP's (1 ad, 1juv), 3 Green and 2 Common Sandpipers, 4 male Ruff, 4 Ringed Plovers, 38+ Blk T Godwits, 2 Curlew, 13 Teal, 2 Wigeon and 1 Shoveler. A female Marsh Harrier, 50+ Sand Martins and a juv Yellow Wagtail were noted. 5 Common Terns flew S. PRD

18th - Warm, bright with NW winds.  A morning seawatch provided 20 Curlew, 3 Whimbrel, 1 Sandwich and 5 Common Terns all S. GG.  Viewed from the hide were 4 Green and 2 Common Sandpipers, 13 Dunlin, 67 Blk T Godwits, 3 Ringed Plovers, 2 Wigeon, 4 Yellow Wagtails and 2 Marsh Harriers. 2 Sandwich Terns and 1 Med Gull were also noted. 19th - Mostly warm, sunny with some cloud/rain and W winds.  A very early seawatch saw a Fulmar, 1 Little Egret, 2 Sandwich Terns, 4 Whimbrel, 1 Curlew, a grey Goose sp and 10 Oystercatchers. GG. A simultaneous viewing across the scrape area yielded 1 male Ruff, 1 Common and 1 Green Sandpipers, 1 Snipe, 37 Blk T Godwits, 18 Curlew, 5 Oystercatchers, 5 Avocets +3juvs, 4 Dunlin, 3 Ringed Plovers and 2 Wigeon. Also 10+ Yellow Wagtails, 3 Marsh Harriers, 1 Barn Owl and 43 Greylag Geese. A Whimbrel was heard. KA.  A further seawatch gave only 4 Dunlin, 1 Blk T Godwit, a Guillebill and 8 Oystercatchers all S. There were good movements of Sand Martins, Swallows and Swifts throughout. GG/KA

20th - Bright with a slight WSW breeze.  An early look from the hide produced little of note this morning, 34 Blk T Godwits, 22 Curlew, 5 Whimbrel, 3 Oystercatchers, 3 Ringed Plovers, 3 Avocets +3juvs, 2 Wigeon, 20 Greylag Geese and 2+ Yellow Wagtails.  A single Ringed Plover was on the sluice. Hirundine movement was much quieter. KA. Later visits added 1 Snipe and a Marsh Harrier, with increased numbers for Whimbrel and Greylag Geese at 8 and 49 respectively.  4 Dunlin flew around but didn't stay. MR/PRD. Off-shore heading S were 2 Curlew and an Oystercatcher, while 2 Turnstones had arrived on the sluice. PRD.

21st - Warm, bright with on/off drizzle.  The scrape during today held 1 Wood Sandpiper, 2 Common Sandpipers, 1 of each GreenshankSnipe and Ringed Plover, 6+ Whimbrel, 24 Curlew, 59 Blk T Godwits, 5 Avocets +1juv, 3 Teal, 2 Wigeon, 4 Oystercatchers and 80 Greylag Geese.  A single Sandwich Tern sat on the scrape and 3 Marsh Harriers were noted. PRD/MR/SC.  A one hour seawatch provided a Manx Shearwater, 1 Turnstone both N while 2 Whimbrel and 6 Oystercatchers headed S. PRD/MR. Early evening a Turtle Dove flew over. JBS.

22nd - Dry and bright with reasonable SSW winds. Viewed from the hide this morning were 1 Golden Plover, 2 Common Sandpipers, 54 Blk T Godwits, 2 Ringed Plovers, 1 Snipe, 2 Avocets +1juv, 2 Sandwich Terns 1 ad+1 juv and 63+ Greylag Geese. A single female Marsh Harrier was over the fields. MR. During an afternoon visit, a juv Med Gull, 1 Whimbrel, 1 Golden Plover and 4 Oystercatchers were seen headed SW.  The scrape area gave additions of 1 Green Sandpiper, 3 Dunlin, 5 Whimbrel, 16+ Curlew, a juv Redshank, 4 Oystercatchers, 2 of each Teal and Wigeon, 1 Common Tern and 2 juv Yellow Wagtails.  40+ Sand Martins and 200+ Rooks were also noted. PRD.  

23rd - Cool to start, SSW winds with some light drizzle .  An early visit saw c1000 Swifts moving S over the site between 06.00 and 06.15hrs.  The scrape was fairly quiet with 3 Common Sandpipers, 60+ Blk T Godwits, 1 Snipe, 10 Curlew, 2 Wigeon, 6 Teal, 2 Avocets +1juv, 3+ Yellow Wagtails, 3 Oystercatchers and 87+ Greylag Geese.  Near the mounds were a further 4 Yellow Wagtails inc 2juvs, while 4 Kestrels were creating havoc over the greensward. KA.  Reported early evening was a single Hobby. JBS.

24th - On/off sun/heavy rain all day with SW winds.  Noted for the scrape today were a juv LRP, 2 Common Sandpipers, Yellow Wagtail and 4 Sandwich Terns. PRD/JK.  This evening 3 Marsh Harriers were all viewed together atop the same tree, an adult Med Gull was on the scrape and a Hobby was again seen over the site. c2000 hirundines were also on passage. JBS.

25th - Warm, bright with SW winds.  Over the site this morning was an unexpected Cuckoo and also 1 Little Egret.GG.  A count of 11 Dunlin and 10 Whimbrel briefly on the scrape were reported.LD. Throughout the day the scrape held 3 Common Sandpipers, 1 Green Sandpiper, 69 Blk T Godwits, 2 Ringed Plovers, 1 Avocet +1juv, 1 Wigeon, 4 Dunlin and 5+ Yellow Wagtails.  A good passage of Swifts and Sand Martins was again noted. Two sessions at seawatching provided 3 Whimbrel, 2 Curlew, 1 of each Sandwich and Common Terns and 12 Dunlin. GG/JK/KA.

26th - Cooler, slighty overcast with SW winds.  On the scrape this morning were 4 Common Sandpipers, 1 Grey Plover, 2 Dunlin, 3 Whimbrel, 47+ Blk T Godwits, 2 Avocet +1juv, 1 Snipe, 2 Ringed Plovers and 2 Common Terns. A juv Med Gull was by the sluice. GG. A one hour afternoon seawatch saw the sum total of 2 Curlew. GG/AD.  A late addition on the scrape was a Green Sandpiper. JBS. This evening over high tide - 16.30 to 18.30hrs - seawatching was slightly more productive with 1 Bar T Godwit, 37 Oystercatchers, 1 Whimbrel and 3 Curlew all headed SW.  4+ Yellow Wagtails flew over while a glance over the grazing marsh saw 35+ Curlew and 5+ Whimbrel. PRD.

27th - Mostly on/off showers/heavy rain all day, occassional blue skies.  An adult Yellow legged Gull, a juv Med Gull, a Wood Sandpiper, 3 Green and 5 Common Sandpipers proved to be the main birds of note on site. The scrape also held 45 Blk T Godwits, 4 Dunlin, 2 of each Curlew and Ringed Plovers, 2 Avocet +1juv, 3 of Redshank and Whimbrel, 5 juv Shelduck along with 1 of each Wigeon, Shoveler and Common Tern.  Unfortunately for a Moorhen chick, a female Marsh Harrier was out hunting with success.  House Martins, Sand Martins and Swifts were seen with numbers 8+, 50+ and 2 respectively. A single Yellow Wagtail, 4 Sedge Warblers and a juv Willow Warbler rounded up the days sightings. PRD.  

28th - Mainly bright with SSW winds.  The scrape today held a juv LRP, 1 Green and 4 Common Sandpipers, 5 Dunlin, 33 Blk T Godwits, 1 Snipe, 4 Ringed Plovers, 2 Avocets +1juv, 4 Oystercatchers, 3 Curlew, 9 Teal, 1 Wigeon, 2 Shoveler, 5 juv Shelduck and 74 Greylag Geese. 15 Whimbrel were on the scrape briefly then relocated to the grazing marsh. 7 Yellow Wagtails, 40+ Sand Martins and 1 Swift were noted, as were 1 adult fem and 1 juv Marsh Harriers. A single Golden Plover headed S over the scrape and 8 Oystercatchers also flew S. PRD/MR.

29th - Winds SSW, initially dry but an early heavy shower.  Before and during the rain, views across the scrape provided a male Ruff, a juv LRP, 4 Common Sandpipers, 2 Dunlin, 39 Blk T Godwits, 9 Whimbrel, 11 Curlew, 1 Snipe, 1 Avocet +1juv, 4 Ringed Plovers, 1 Wigeon, 5 Teal, 2 Oystercatchers and 2 Yellow Wagtails. 42+ Greylag Geese were noted.  Moving S over the site were 300+ Swifts while off-shore 4 Oystercatchers also went S.  +3 Blk T Godwits flew over heading towards the scrape area. KA.  Later additions for the scrape were 1 Wood and 1 Green Sandpipers, a second juv LRP and 2 Golden Plovers.  An adult Little Stint made a brief 10 minute afternoon appearance. MR/JK.      A one hour seawatch over high tide produced 4 Bar T Godwits, 4 Grey Plovers, 9 Whimbrel, 2 Curlew, 1 Turnstone, 4 Ringed Plovers, 2 Oystercatchers, 1 Common Tern and 50+ Swifts all headed S. PRD.  3 Common Cranes were reported 70m off-shore being mobbed by gulls. RW

30th - Dry and bright with SW winds. This morning the scrape yielded 1 Wood Sandpiper, 1 juv LRP, 5 Common Sandpipers, 2 Dunlin, 4 Ringed Plovers, a Snipe, 46+ Blk T Godwits, 7 Whimbrel, 3 Curlew, 1 Avocet +1juv and 45+ Greylag Geese.  A single Sandwich Tern and 3 Yellow Wagtails were also noted. MR.  Early afternoon a juv fem Garganey was an addition for the scrape. PRD.  Late afternoon additions were an eclipse drake Garganey, 1 Green Sandpiper, Snipe numbered 2, Blk T Godwits were at 56 and a female Marsh Harrier was also seen. LH.

31st - This morning dry, bright with both the sea and scrape like mill ponds. Visits to the hide saw 1 Wood Sandpiper, 1 Green Sandpiper, 5+ Common Sandpipers, 1 LRP, 2 Snipe, 1 Whimbrel, 4 Ringed Plovers, 3 Oystercatchers, 1 Avocet +1juv, numbers were down for Blk T Godwits with only 9 seen and 53+ Greylag Geese flew in.  9+ Curlew came in over the scrape to the grazing marsh.  2 Yellow Wagtails were also noted.
