1st - A very brief visit to the scrape today and very few birds seen, just 1 Bar Tailed and 1 Blk T Godwit, 1 Ringed Plover and 2 Oystercatchers. On the walk to the hide the Cetti's Warbler was heard singing and 2 Cuckoo's were seen. GG.
2nd - Bright, warm with SW winds. A Ring-necked Parakeet heading NE was reported over the carpark at 7am this morning. Also 1 Little Egret. IM. A mid-morning visit and across the scrape were 2 Avocet, 1 Blk T Godwit, 1 Dunlin, 1 Ringed Plover, 22+ Shelduck and a male Wheatear. The first of the Lapwing chicks were seen with c4 on the field. 1 Turnstone on the sluice. 9 Common and 3 Lesser Whitethroats were seen, as were 7+ Sedge Warblers. From the carpark to approach road areas were 3 Cuckoos and a single Swift flew over. KA. A further report was of 2 Spoonbills as fly-overs and a possible Water Pipit on the rear of the scrape. AM/IM.
3rd - Dry, mostly bright but breezy. A morning visit provided a Common Sandpiper, 1 Blk T Godwit, 4+ Whimbrel and 25+ Shelduck all on the scrape with 2 Wheatears and a Sand Martin also seen. PRD. Early evening saw 2 Cuckoos by the sewage farm and again in flight in front of the hide, also 1 Barn Owl. Additional birds on the scrape were 9 Dunlin, 3 Ringed Plovers, 6 Avocet and 1 Yellow Wagtail. 2 Purple Sandpipers were by the sluice. KA/JBS/MR.
4th - Overcast, slight rain with NW winds. The bird of the day was a Wood Warbler, found by Gary Gardiner approx 1pm, while we were watching for the singing Cetti's. The last record of Wood Warbler was exactly 12 years ago on 4th May 1997. Today's bird was very vocal and viewable for c1hr but despite searching by many, it was not seen or heard for the rest of the afternoon. GG/KA/PRD/JBS. Other species seen today included 1 Cetti's Warbler, 1 Cuckoo, 3 Swifts, 2 Chiffchaff, 4 Blackcaps, 4 Lesser Whitethroats, 1 Whimbrel, 2 Hobbys, 1 over the fields and another heading N off-shore, while the scrape held 4 Dunlin, 1 Blk T Godwit, 1 Common Sandpiper, 1 LRP, 2 Ringed Plovers, 4 Avocet and 2+ Yellow Wagtails. 5th - Rain during the morning but brightened later, WSW winds. The trees and bushes supplied 2 Chiffchaff, 2 Blackcaps and 1 Willow Warbler. A Fulmar was seen close in-shore, 2 Swifts and a fem Marsh Harrier were fly-overs. GG. Viewed from the hide were 2 Turtle Doves, 3+ House Martins, 1 LRP, 2 Ringed Plovers, 1 Blk T Godwit, 6 Dunlin, 4 Avocet, 1+ Whimbrel, 1 Turnstone and 3 Yellow Wagtails (inc 1 Channel variant). The Cetti's Warbler and 2 Cuckoos were also noted. GG/PRD/KA.
6th - Warm and dry but strong W winds. During a morning visit, the scrape held 1 Blk T Godwit, 8 Dunlin, 4 Avocet, 3+ Ringed Plovers and 3 Oystercatchers. Also of note were 1 Cuckoo, 1 Whimbrel and 3 Swifts. Seawatching for 20 minutes at high tide produced nothing. The paddocks were void of birds. KA.
7th - Strong W winds today. Birds of note were 4 Avocet, 3 Ringed Plover, 2 Purple Sandpipers (summer plumage, on rocks below seawall by golf course), 8 Dunlin, 15+ Whimbrel, 1 Turnstone, 6+ Swift, 1+ Sand Martin, 1+ House Martin, 4+ Wheatear and 4+ Willow Warblers.PRD.
8th - Blustery WSW winds, rain then sunshine. 2 short visits to the scrape produced 19 Dunlin, 6 Ringed Plovers, 4 Avocets, 2 Oystercatcher, 4 Whimbrel. A Whinchat was in front of the hide, also seen were 1 Wheatear, 2 Yellow Wagtails, 5 Swifts, 2 Cuckoo and the singing Cetti's Warbler. GG/PRD/SC.
9th - Light SW wind and bright. A Spotted Flycatcher was located opposite the approach road briefly, 5 Wheatears were seen along the sea wall, also noted were 1+ Hobby, 10+ Reed and 4+ Sedge warblers, 4 Blackcaps, 2 Willow Warblers and 1 Chiffchaff. GG. The scrape held 10 Dunlin, 4 Avocets, 4 Ringed Plovers and 6 Turnstones. AD/MR. The farm area held 5+ Singing Corn Buntings, also a singing Cetti's Warbler that is thought to be a different bird to the one at the sluice. KA.
10th - Warm with very light winds. Visits this morning provided 2 Whimbrel, 8 Dunlin, 6 Avocet, 3+ Ringed Plovers, 1 Turnstone and 34+ Shelduck all viewed from the hide. 26 Blk T Godwits circled the scrape before continuing their flight E. Singles of Turtle Dove and Common Tern were also noted. KA/MR/IM/GG. This evening 8 Ringed Plovers were seen. JBS.
11th - Very strong NE Winds. The scrape this morning held only 8 Dunlin, 3 Ringed Plovers and 4 Avocet. With the high winds, checking the bushes and trees was impossible but the Cetti's Warbler was heard. GG. This afternoon saw 2 Greenshanks and 3 Common Terns on the scrape. MR.
12th - Continual strong NE winds again. The Cetti's Warbler was singing this morning. MR. Late afternoon into evening visits gave views across the scrape of 1 Green Sandpiper, 8 Ringed Plovers, 3 Whimbrel, 4 Dunlin and 2 Yellow Wagtails. MR/JBS.
13th - Overcast with NNE winds and rain during the afternoon. The scrape throughout today held 3+ Common Sandpipers, 4 Dunlin, 6 Ringed Plovers and 4 Avocet. The Cetti's Warbler was heard, a Spotted Flycatcher, 4 Garden Warblers, 2 Turnstones and a Barn Owl were also seen. MR/KA/PRD/JBS/SC/PC. A Melodious/Icterine Warbler in sub-song was found by Pete Davis, it was seen very infrequently so unfortunately identification was not clinched.
14th - Mostly overcast, dry and NE winds. Noted behind the carpark early this morning were 2 Garden Warblers, Blackcap and a Barn Owl. SC. Slightly later and the scrape held 7+ Common Sandpipers, 4 Whimbrel, 1 Bar T Godwit, 5 Avocet, 4 Dunlin, 1 Turnstone and 2 Gadwall. 8+ Garden Warblers were throughout the site. PRD. 1 Little Tern and a single Wheatear were also reported.
15th - Rain early morning followed by sunny periods with some winds. The Cetti's Warbler was singing this morning and then late afternoon was seen behind the carpark. The scrape fairly quiet but still held 4 Avocet, 6 Ringed Plovers and 7+ Common Sandpipers. A Tufted Duck appeared briefly and a Yellow Wagtail was also noted. JBS/MR/PRD.
16th - The scrape throughout today held 1 Common Sandpiper, 6 Avocet, 3 Dunlin, 4+ Ringed Plover and 2 Gadwall. The Cetti's Warbler was behind the carpark again and was both seen and heard. MR.
18th - At least 41 Shelduck were on the scrape area today with 2 Gadwall and 4 Avocets also showing. A Hobby was on site and the Cetti's Warbler was singing. PRD.
19th - Warm with NW winds and sudden torrential rain early morning, brightening later. 7 Avocets, 9 Oystercatchers, 3+ Ringed Plovers and 1 Barn Owl were viewed from the hide. A seawatch saw 15 Common Scoter N, while of note along the bushes were 2 Lesser Whitethroats and a male Blackcap. KA.
20th - Warm again with light winds. Much the same as yesterday around the scrape with 7 Avocets, 3 Ringed Plovers, 4+ Oystercatchers and a Barn Owl. The Cetti's Warbler was singing and showing well this morning behind the sluice area. MR. Later additions were 2 Whimbrel and behind the carpark was a Spotted Flycatcher. PRD/JBS. A male Marsh Harrier was also noted over the site. SC/PC.
21st - A 6 hour stint was disappointing, birds of note were a 1st S Med Gull, 1 Whimbrel, 1 Little Egret, 4 Avocets, a female Marsh Harrier, 1 Yellow Wagtail , 2 Corn Buntings and a Fulmar. PRD. A Hobby flew through during an evening visit. JBS. A late message on the RBA pager of 4 Spoonbills Holland Haven Country Park.
22nd - Bright with an increasing WSW wind. Not much of note with a Spotted Flycatcher, 1 Chiffchaff and Cetti's Warbler around the bushes. On the scrape were 1 Blk T Godwit, 6 Dunlin, 1 Whimbrel, 4 Ringed Plovers and 4 Avocets. A single Wheatear was along the seawall and at sea 5 Oystercatchers flew S and a Marsh Harrier went NW. GG.
23rd - Sunny, warm and a ESE wind. On Holland Marsh were 2 Little Egrets and an adult Med Gull, the scrape held 2 Sanderling, 10 Dunlin, 4 Avocets and 2 Oystercatchers. GG/MR. At the Farm 5+ Corn Buntings were singing and a pair of Marsh Harriers were displaying. KA/GG. Late afternoon 2 Little Terns were seen offshore. PRD.
24th - Very warm and bright with light E winds. An early morning to early afternoon visit provided 3+ Common Sandpipers, 4 Avocet, 1pr Gadwall, 1 Blk T Godwit, 4 Oystercatchers, 6 Ringed Plovers and 1 Wheatear on the scrape. The Cetti's Warbler was heard, 2 Wheatears were along the seawall and fishing off-shore were 2 Little Terns. 3 Swifts, a Cuckoo, 3 Lesser Whitethroats, a Chiffchaff and male Blackcap were also noted. Sedge and Reed Warblers were showing very well in good numbers throughout the site. KA. A female Marsh Harrier was viewed across Holland Marsh. GG. Evening visits produced a Fulmar off-shore and a drake Tufted Duck briefly on the scrape. GG/MR.
25th - A dry, warm morning but overcast with increasing E winds. Early to mid-morning on site and the scrape held 1pr Gadwall, 1 Common Sandpiper, 4 Ringed Plovers and 4 Avocet of note. Although 2 Common Terns were off-shore heading N, nothing else was noted along the seawall to Frinton. A Little Egret flew N across the fields and again the Cetti's Warbler was singing but not seen. 26th - Rain most of the morning, brightening later. Throughout the day, the somewhat quiet scrape held 1 Common Sandpiper, 3 Ringed Plovers, 27+ Shelduck along with the first of their brood and also noted was a Redshank chick. Avocet numbers today fluctuated to a maximum of 10. PRD/MR. A drake Gadwall and 2 Sandwich Terns were also seen, while off-shore were 2 Little Terns. 2 Cetti's Warblers were on site, one behind the carpark and the other by Holland Marsh. PRD. At sea an adult Med Gull was seen flying S. DM.
27th - Overcast with a W wind, birds of note on the scrape were 2 Dunlin, 6 Avocets, 2 Ringed Plovers a single Brent Goose and a drake Gadwall. GG/PB.
28th - Mostly bright with occassional light WNW winds. The scrape this morning held 12 Avocets, 3 Dunlin, a drake Gadwall, 3+ Ringed Plovers and briefly 2 Blk T Godwits. Shelduck ducklings were at 11 and Redshank young at 5. On site were 3+ Cuckoos, 1 Little Egret and 2 Cetti's Warblers, one seen and heard by Holland Marsh while the other was singing from across the field. 1 Sandwich Tern, 2 Common Terns and 2 Fulmar were viewed off-shore. The farm area provided 5 singing Corn Buntings and again throughout the site Reed Warblers were plentiful with 30+ being noted. Some 150+ Painted Ladies were seen today. GG/PRD/KA.
29th - The heavy mist cleared before 6am leaving the morning hot with slight SE winds. The scrape early on, held 12 Avocet, 6 Oystercatchers, 2 Ringed Plovers and both the drake Gadwall and Shoveler. 12 Blk T Godwits dropped in slightly later. Along the seawall to Frinton there were 25+ Lapwings on the Golf Course and 7 Oystercatchers flew in/off, stayed briefly then continued N. A Cuckoo was by the carpark. KA. 2 adult Med Gulls and 1 Dunlin were additional for later in the day. PRD.
30th - Very hot but breezy ESE winds. A female Marsh Harrier was seen over the fields, while viewed across the scrape there were only 8 Avocets, 2 of each Ringed Plovers and Oystercatchers, the drake Gadwall, 2 Shoveler, 12 Redshanks and 19 Shelducks plus young for both the latter. MR.
31st - Again very warm with strong S winds. This morning a male Marsh Harrier was across the rear of the fields but the scrape was much the same as yesterday with 2 Ringed Plovers, the drake Gadwall and the Shelducks who still have 11 young. Avocet numbers however, were up at 16. A Little Egret was also seen. KA/MR/IM/PRD. Reported for Holland Marsh were 2 presumed escaped Red Brested Geese. EF.
